7 Days, 6 Nights Machame Route

The Whiskey Route Adventure

7 Days, 6 Nights

The Machame Route is celebrated as one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and rewarding treks, offering a perfect mix of challenge and beauty. Known as the Whiskey Route, it’s ideal for adventurers seeking variety in landscapes — from dense rainforests and heather-covered ridges to glaciers and sweeping alpine vistas.

Day 01

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast, you’ll travel to Machame Gate where your journey begins. The trail leads through verdant rainforest alive with exotic birdlife, moss-draped trees, and the occasional colobus monkey. As you ascend steadily, the forest gradually thins, and you’ll reach Machame Camp by late afternoon. Here, your crew sets up camp and prepares your first dinner on the mountain.

Day 02

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Leaving the forest behind, the path climbs steeply up to a ridge leading onto the Shira Plateau. The air becomes cooler and the vegetation changes as you enter the moorland zone. The views of Kibo and Mount Meru in the distance are simply spectacular. You’ll arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon, with time to relax and take in the high-altitude landscapes.

Day 03

Shira to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Today is crucial for acclimatization as you trek from Shira to the famous Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation at 4,630 meters. You’ll stop for lunch here before descending into the Barranco Valley. The descent helps your body adjust to the altitude while offering incredible views of the Western Breach and Great Barranco Wall. You’ll spend the night at Barranco Camp, set in one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic valleys.

Day 04

Barranco to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you’ll face the impressive Barranco Wall — a thrilling scramble that rewards you with breathtaking views from the top. The route then winds gently down into the Karanga Valley before ascending to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day, allowing extra time for rest and acclimatization in preparation for the summit.

Day 05

Karanga to Barafu Camp

Continue the climb through sparse alpine desert to Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit push. The landscape is barren and windswept, with views of both the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Spend the afternoon resting, rehydrating, and preparing for the final climb to the summit.

Day 06

Summit to Mweka Camp

At midnight, you’ll begin the final ascent under a blanket of stars. The climb is challenging, but as dawn breaks over the mountain, the sense of reward is immense. Standing at Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — Africa’s highest point — you’ll witness one of the most unforgettable sunrises on Earth. After photos and celebration, begin your descent to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Day 07

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Descend through the lush rainforest, enjoying the change in scenery and warm air. At Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate before returning to Moshi for a relaxing evening and reflection on your incredible accomplishment.
