7 Days, 6 Nights Rongai Route
The Northern Route
7 Days, 6 Nights
The Rongai Route is celebrated as the only northern approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a quieter, less-crowded wilderness experience with drier weather conditions near the Kenyan border. Popularly known as the Northern Route (or Wilderness Route), this trail ascends through pine forests and sweeping moorlands beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi, crossing the alpine Saddle before reaching Uhuru Peak and descending via the lush Marangu Route.
Arrival in Arusha & Gear Briefing
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK), you will be warmly met by your transfer team and driven to your lodge in Arusha. Settle in and relax before your head mountain guide arrives for a thorough expedition briefing, day-by-day overview, and equipment check to ensure all necessary cold-weather gear is in place.
Rongai Gate to 1st Caves Camp
After an early breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate to complete national park registration while your porters organize expedition gear. A scenic transfer then takes you around the eastern slopes to the Rongai trailhead near the Kenyan border. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through farmland and pine plantations before entering lush montane forest. Enjoy a trailside lunch break before arriving at 1st Caves Camp (2,600m) in the late afternoon, where hot tea and a warm dinner await.
1st Caves Camp to Kikelewa Cave Camp
Following a hearty breakfast, continue ascending through open moorland hillsides with sweeping views across the Kenyan plains. The trail passes Second Cave (3,450m), an ideal spot for a relaxing picnic lunch. Continue climbing steadily into the moorland zone to reach Kikelewa Cave Camp (3,600m), tucked inside a sheltered valley beneath the soaring eastern towers of Mawenzi Peak.
Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
A short but steep ascent takes you out of the moorland zone into a dramatic alpine setting surrounded by giant groundsels and lobelias. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m), situated beside a turquoise alpine lake directly under the jagged, cathedral-like spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon resting, absorbing breathtaking sunset panoramas, and allowing your body to adapt to the higher altitude.
Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Trek westward across the vast alpine desert known as the “Saddle”—the stark, lunar-like plateau connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive by early afternoon at Kibo Hut (4,700m) situated at the base of the final summit cone. Enjoy lunch, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the summit attempt. Your guide will provide a detailed evening briefing before an early dinner and rest by 7:00 PM.
Kibo Hut to Summit (Uhuru Peak) & Horombo Hut
Wake around 11:30 PM for hot tea and biscuits before commencing the summit push under headlamps. Ascend steep switchbacks over heavy scree past Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m) to reach Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim at dawn. Continue along the snow-draped rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the Roof of Africa. After taking celebratory summit photos, descend back to Kibo Hut for lunch and a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for dinner and a well-earned sleep.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Arusha/Moshi
Following breakfast, celebrate your summit success with a traditional singing, dancing, and tipping ceremony alongside your mountain crew. Complete the final 6-hour descent through the moorlands and lush montane rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,980m). Sign out of the national park registry to receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates (gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Gilman’s Point). Meet your transfer vehicle for the return drive to Arusha, Moshi, or direct airport departure.
