9 Days, 8 Nights Northern Circuit Route

The Grand Traverse

9 Days, 8 Nights

The Lemosho Route is celebrated as the most pristine and picturesque approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a superior acclimatization profile and the highest summit success rates. Widely known as the Scenic Route (or Panoramic Route), this trail starts on the remote western slopes, traversing ancient rainforests, crossing the vast Shira Plateau, and conquering the famous Barranco Wall on your ultimate ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 01

Arusha to Londorossi Gate & Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)

Following breakfast and a morning briefing in Arusha, drive through the western approaches to Londorossi Park Gate to complete entry registration formalities. A short transfer along a rugged forest track brings you to the Lemosho trailhead. Accompanied by an armed national park ranger due to wildlife in this untouched western corridor, begin ascending along a winding trail through dense, ancient montane rainforest. Keep watch for black-and-white colobus monkeys and exotic bird species before reaching Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp for dinner and overnight.

The canopy thins, revealing sweeping views across the rolling hills where giant ericas, lobelias, and wild grasses dominate the volcanic landscape. Cross the rocky crest of the Shira Ridge and drop down onto the vast, windswept expanse of the Shira Plateau to reach Shira 1 Camp, enjoying an open sunset vista across the western slopes.

Day 03

Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut Camp

Embark on a scenic eastward hike across the wide Shira Plateau toward the base of the rugged Lent Hills. The landscape transitions into high-alpine desert, characterized by stark volcanic terrain, dramatic lava formations, and cooler alpine breezes. After crossing the plateau, arrive at the tranquil and remote Moir Hut Camp, tucked neatly into a sheltered gorge. This higher sleep altitude provides substantial long-term acclimatization benefits for the summit days ahead.

Today is a cornerstone “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization day. Ascend across volcanic scree to the dramatic landmark of Lava Tower and the Shark’s Tooth rock formation (4,600m / 15,090ft), where lunch is served amid sweeping alpine views. In the afternoon, descend along the Southern Circuit trail through the otherworldly “Garden of the Senecios” into the majestic Barranco Valley, sleeping at nearly the same altitude as the night before while your body adapts to the thin air.

Reaching the top rewards you with magnificent panoramic views over Kibo’s southern glaciers and icefields. From the wall’s summit, follow a trail of undulating ridges, ascending and descending across riverbeds to arrive at Karanga Camp (3,960m) for an afternoon of rest, acclimatization, and evening stargazing.

Continue for another hour along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the Roof of Africa. After taking celebratory photos at the continent’s highest point, descend back to Barafu Camp for a hot lunch and rest, before continuing down to Mweka Camp for a celebratory dinner.
